Microbial nitrogen cycle - Meta-omics approach across 12 Swiss Lakes

Given the importance of the lacustrine microbial N cycle in reducing the N export downstream, it is crucial to better understand the functional components driving the N removal. The microbial community, their N transformation potential, and the actual expression of these genes in freshwater sediments have not been studied in sufficient detail. Here we study the microbial N cycle in twelve lakes with various productivity in Switzerland, in order to enlighten the in situ N processes expression and to determine environmental controls.
