We propose to perform an in situ characterization of the melting curve of potassium chloride using a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and laser-heated diamond anvil cell. The measurements will be performed in a pressure-temperature range between ambient and 2 Mbar and 7000 K, respectively. At the same time, we will run ab initio simulations to provide a complete overview of the melting process of KCl under pressure. The obtained results will be used to shed light on the discrepancy on the reported “high” and “low” melting curves of this alkali halide.
