Project Description: "Integration of Creative and Smart Cities through Urban Mobility: Evidence Based on Discourses" 1. Introduction: The project, "Integration of Creative and Smart Cities through Urban Mobility: Evidence Based on Discourses," delves into the intricate relationship between the Creative City and Smart City paradigms. It specifically examines the crucial role of urban mobility, investigating how it functions as an element of integration, tension, or coexistence between these distinct models of urban development. The research employs discourse analysis as its core methodology to uncover and interpret the evidence surrounding this integration. 2. Objectives: The primary goal is to critically analyze discourses present in diverse sources (e.g., policy documents, urban plans, media coverage, academic literature, public discourse) related to two specific cities: Covilhã (Portugal) and Curitiba (Brazil). This analysis aims to map how urban mobility is framed and discussed in connection with both creative and smart city concepts and practices within these contexts. The project seeks to identify synergies, conflicts, omissions, and underlying ideologies that shape the actual or perceived integration of these urban models. 3. Methodology: The core methodological approach is Discourse Analysis. This involves the systematic collection and critical examination of a wide range of textual and communicative data pertaining to urban mobility within the frameworks of creative and smart city initiatives in Covilhã and Curitiba. The analysis will focus on identifying linguistic patterns, recurring themes, social representations, arguments, and narratives that shape the understanding and implementation of mobility at the intersection of these two urban paradigms in the selected cities. 4. Database Development Team: A comprehensive database underpins the analytical work. The construction of this database involved a collaborative effort from an inter-institutional team: Magnus Emmendoerfer (Chair - Federal University of Viçosa - UFV) Alexandre Serra (University of Coimbra - UCoimbra) Vitória Lopes (Federal University of Viçosa - UFV) Jorge Leal da Silva (State University of Tocantins - UNITINS) 5. Coordination and Timeline: The project commenced in 2024. It is coordinated by Professor Magnus Emmendoerfer from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), Brazil. 6. Data Access: In the interest of transparency, replicability, and fostering further collaborative research, the data gathered and structured for this project is publicly accessible. 7. Expected Outcomes and Contribution: This project is anticipated to yield a more nuanced understanding of how the ideals of urban creativity and intelligence intersect and influence each other through the lens of mobility policies and practices in the studied cities. The findings aim to provide valuable insights for urban planners, policymakers, researchers, and the wider community, informing discussions and the development of more integrated, sustainable, and human-centric urban strategies.
