资源简介:
Low-income visually impaired people still struggle to gain an education, a job, and independence because commercial Braille embossers cost over $2,000. This study introduces OpenBraille, an open-source, economical Braille embosser for practical use, local production, and multilingual accessibility, not only lab demonstration. A Cartesian XY motion platform with two NEMA 17 stepper motors and a 12 V push-pull solenoid embosses on impact. A lightweight, end-to-end software stack using Arduino circuits and Python-Flask web middleware can immediately translate Unicode to Braille. This works for English and Bangla text. A motion subsystem with 1.8° stepper motors, GT2 belt transmission, and 16× microstepping achieves a spatial resolution of 12.5 μm. The solenoid actuation settings match international Braille dot height and spacing requirements on 120–150 gsm paper. The whole bill of materials is $60 (BDT 7200), 9% cheaper than proprietary embossers. In lab and field testing with visually impaired users, the dot success rate is 98.2%, the mean dot height is 0.45 0.05 mm, and the compact, battery-powered system can transfer 1.5 characters per second. Since mechanical designs, firmware, and software are open source, anybody may copy, edit, and enhance them. This is beneficial in resource-poor areas.
