Male guppy ornamentation: a multi-generational dataset of aligned images of guppies and their orange and black coloration

For this study, we created a multi-generational pedigree and phenotyped 3,229 guppy males. To understand the inheritance of coloration and the response of color traits to selection, we applied artificial selection for the amount of orange coloration, creating 3 independently replicated pairs of up-selected and down-selected lines. This repository includes the 14,100 photos taken for this study, before and after processing several processing steps. Free swimming adult males were photographed in a small tank (photarium) several times on each side. By taking multiple photos of each male, measurement error can be parsed from biological variation. Combining the data in this repository with the additional linked data sets (pedigrees and sequencing data), it becomes possible to trace the inheritance of guppy ornamentation and reveal its genetic basis.
