Oryza longistaminata is a perennial wild rice species native to Africa. It is morphologically distinct from other AA-genome species. It is rhizomatous, and has unique ligular characteristics. It grows in ecologically diverse regions and spreads mainly by vegetative mechanisms. The genome is type AA with 2x = 24 chromosomes; identical to Oryza sativa, the cultivated rice species. Oryza longistaminata is believed to be the wild progenitor of O. glabberrima.
