Sputum microbiota from the World Asthma Phenotypes Study. WASP

Asthma is an umbrella diagnosis encompassing distinct pathophysiological mechanisms. While a global problem, most of our understanding of the inflammatory and microbiological processes, which inform asthma therapies, have been based predominately on metropolitan populations from high income countries. As a result, the variance in inflammatory and microbiological processes associated with asthma globally is poorly understood, as well as interactions between these processes. This study aimed to identify conserved and geographically distinct airway immune/microbiota associations in young people with asthma.
