VPRS 4025 Town Clerk's Outward Letter Books

Letter press copies of outward correspondence written by the Town Clerk, often in response to letters received, form the contents of this series.Town Clerk's Outward Letter Books formed an integral part of the Town Clerk's record-keeping system in relation to official correspondence until well into the twentieth century.Until 1910, incoming correspondence was filed separately from the replies. Much of the inward correspondence was cross-referenced to the outward correspondence by either year and page number or volume and page number.After 1910, the outward letter books continued to be maintained. However, copies of some outward correspondence were filed with the inward correspondence at this time, and the correspondence files (VPRS 3183 Town Clerk's Correspondence Files Series II) were still cross-referenced to the letter books as above.
