Lab 2: Woodlot Dataset 2 - Sampling 10 pairs of Sugar Maple trees using the transect method in the Danby Woodlot at York University (Keele Campus)

The purpose of this study was to observe and compare the distance between adult maple trees and their closest saplings in the Danby woodlot of York University on September 24th 2015. For the duration of the study period (4:45pm - 5:20pm) , it was quite sunny with an average temperature of about 23 degrees Celsius and little to no wind. The data was collected by walking along a 25 m transect and selecting random adult maple trees along with their closest sapling. Their diameters at breast height (DBH) were recorded along with the distances between them using a measuring tape and the percent of canopy coverage for the adult trees. A maple tree was defined as an adult if it's DBH was greater than 5 inches and a sapling was defined as a tree having a DBH less than its adult counterpart. The study had a sample size of n = 10 pairs of trees (for a total of 20 individuals). Group members: Saraswatie, Bavatharane, Azeb and Eman.
