Introduction to the ODCB Dataset of Majalengka Regency
Majalengka Regency, located in West Java Province, holds a wealth of historical and cultural heritage that stretches from the era of Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms, through the Islamic period, to the Dutch colonial era. The traces of this long civilization can still be found in various sites, historical buildings, ancient tombs, and cultural artifacts spread across different districts. These heritages are not only silent witnesses of Majalengka’s journey as part of the Sundanese land but also represent the collective identity of the community that continues to live on in daily practices.
As part of preservation efforts, the Dataset of Presumed Cultural Heritage Objects (ODCB) of Majalengka Regency has been compiled. This dataset gathers preliminary documentation of dozens of objects with strong potential to be designated as cultural heritage, including buildings, archaeological sites, and ancient artifacts. Although not all have been officially recognized by the government, each object recorded carries significant values—historical, architectural, spiritual, and social—that enrich our understanding of local cultural dynamics.
The ODCB data covers objects distributed across various regions, from Talaga, Majalengka Kulon, Rajagaluh, Leuwimunding, to Lemahsugih. It includes diverse cultural entities: local museums such as the Talaga Manggung Museum, colonial-era mansions, Chinese temples, prehistoric sites, and sacred places associated with legendary figures like Nyi Rambut Kasih and Prabu Siliwangi. In addition, there are colonial industrial relics such as sugar factories, water towers, and old bridges, which reflect the economic and technological development of the past.
The compilation of this dataset serves two primary purposes:
Academic, as a preliminary reference for researchers, students, and practitioners to further study the cultural heritage potential of Majalengka.
Educational and advocacy, to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving historical heritage as both a collective identity and a valuable cultural asset.
At this stage, the collected data remains an initial inventory of presumed objects. Therefore, further research through multidisciplinary approaches—archaeology, anthropology, history, and conservation sciences—is necessary to strengthen the validity of the data and support the formal designation of these objects as cultural heritage.
With this dataset, it is expected that the cultural heritage of Majalengka Regency will not only be remembered as part of the past but also serve as an inspiration for building a future rooted in local identity and cultural wisdom.
