In order to obtain an indication of the characteristics of people using alcoholism treatment services in Victoria, information was collected from all new admissions over a three month period. The data collected includes age, sex, area of residence, marital status, accommodation, occupation, employment status and hospital and medical attendances and admissions in the previous 12 months. Drug use data included age at commencement of regular drinking, present consumption (in grams) and use of tobacco, tranquillisers and other drugs.
