Consequentialism, Utilitarianism and (Australian) Public Decision Making: Principles, Prevalence and Problems

Sometimes Australian decision makers make use of utilitarian decision making. Is this good? Is this morally defensible? Two examples of this phenomenon are provided in Australian asylum seeker policy and with respect to COVID-19 lockdown laws. I argue that these reflect utilitarian principles, but that utilitarianism as a public philosophy has consequences that are counterintuitive and should not be accepted.
