Results of an NGS-based metabarcoding study exploring the diversity of vector-borne pathogens in Cambodian canines across sites throughout the country. Our protocol targets the 16S rRNA gene of bacteria and the 18S rRNA gene of Apicomplexans and Kinetoplastids to provide a comprehensive characterisation of the principal blood-borne pathogens. This BioProject also includes optimisation data testing out blocking primer functionality to improve the sensitivity of bacterial 16S rRNA targeting as well as a comparison of DNA extraction kits for pathogen detection. This research is relevant as canines in regions of the tropics frequently succumb to vector-borne diseases with many of these also being zoonotic, posing a public-health risk.
