15min City Score - Europe Map

This dataset contains the results of the 15min City Score analysis applied at European scale, covering 786 Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) across Europe.

The 15min City Score is a composite urban metric (0–100) that evaluates the proximity and diversity of essential services reachable on foot within 15 minutes from any given location. The score is computed at the level of H3 hexagons (resolution 9, ~0.105 km²), providing neighbourhood-scale granularity across the European urban system.

The dataset is provided as a single GeoPackage file in EPSG:4326 (WGS84), containing H3 hexagon polygons with the composite 15min City Score (field: 15minCS), eight service category presence indicators, and population estimates derived from Copernicus Urban Atlas 2018 data through areal interpolation. Hexagon centroids can be derived directly from the polygon file.

OpenStreetMap data (Geofabrik extract, 30 April 2025) was used as the source for both the pedestrian network and Points of Interest across eight essential service categories: Neighbourhood Services, Neighbourhood Shops, Sports Facilities, Open Leisure, Healthcare, Education, Cultural, and Mobility.

The score was computed using a modified version of the open-source 15min City Score Toolkit (Albashir et al., 2024; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14231533), scaled up to cover 786 European FUAs. FUA boundaries are derived from the Copernicus Urban Atlas 2018 framework.
