VPRS 6909 Inward Registered Correspondence and Circulars, Crown Lands Commissioners

This series is an artificial one gathering together copies of correspondence and circulars sent or forwarded to the Commissioners of Crown Lands at Melbourne and Western Port and the Police Magistrate at Portland from the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District as well as copies of correspondence sent from the Colonial Secretary in Sydney to the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District.Matters dealt with include the circulation of draft regulations for the occupation of land, particularly outside the Settled Districts, the provision of regular returns, reports regarding the indigenous population especially at the Loddon station, routes for roads, the conduct of the 1851 census and proceedings to be taken with respect to the unauthorised occupation of Crown lands and stock intrusions. Other correspondence deals with the appointment of Justices of the Peace, the activities of local Magistrates and the establishment of Courts of Petty Sessions.
