From Rhetoric to Reality: Mapping Political Commitment to the SDGs in Latin America

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all. In Latin America, where poverty and inequality are widespread, the SDGs are of critical importance. Despite political commitments from governments across the region, progress toward achieving the SDGs has been uneven. This research paper seeks to map the political commitment to the SDGs in Latin America and assess the extent to which it has translated into action. The paper employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a qualitative analysis of policy documents and political statements with a quantitative assessment of progress toward the SDGs at the country level.
The objectives of the study are to identify the factors that contribute to political commitment towards the SDGs in the region and to provide a comprehensive assessment of progress towards the SDGs in each Latin American country. The study's scope is limited to an analysis of national-level policies and initiatives and does not include a detailed examination of local-level efforts. The limitations of the study include potential gaps in data availability and reliability, as well as the inherent subjectivity of the qualitative analysis. Overall, the study aims to contribute to understanding the factors that drive political commitment to the SDGs in Latin America and inform future efforts toward achieving the goals.
