Here we present respiration rates, as oxygen consumption and formazan formation, for a wide range of abundant marine prokaryoplankton including the gammaproteobacteria Halomonas venusta, the alphaproteobacteria Ruegeria pomeroyi and Candidatus Pelagibacter ubique (SAR11), the actinobacteria Agrococcus lahaulensis, and the cyanobacteria Synechococcus marinus and Prochlorococcus marinus. In this dataset, we include abundance and respiration measurements of prokaryoplanton culture experiments. Discrete samples were taken and analysed for INT reduction and oxygen consumption. These data were collected by scientists at the University of East Anglia for the REMineralisation of organic carbon by marine bActerIoplanktoN (REMAIN) project funded by NERC Discovery Science (grant reference NE/R000956/1).
