ThisdocumentisasupplementtothePresident’s2016BudgetrequestsubmittedtoCongressonFebruary2,2015,andservesastheAnnualReportfortheNationalNanotechnologyInitiativecalledforundertheprovisionsofthe21stCenturyNanotechnologyResearchandDevelopmentActof2003(PublicLaw108-153,15USC§7501).ThereportalsoaddressestherequirementforDepartmentofDefensereportingonitsnanotechnologyinvestments,per10USC§2358.ThePresident’s2016Budgetprovides$1.5billionfortheNNI,acontinuedinvestmentinsupportofthePresident’sprioritiesandinnovationstrategy.Cumulativelytotalingmorethan$22billionsincetheinceptionoftheNNIin2001(includingthe2016request),thissupportreflectsnanotechnology’spotentialtosignificantlyimproveourfundamentalunderstandingandcontrolofmatteratthenanoscaleandtotranslatethatknowledgeintosolutionsforcriticalnationalneeds.TheNNIinvestmentsin2014and2015andthoseproposedfor2016reflectarenewedemphasisonacceleratingthetransitionfrombasicR&Dtoinnovationsthatsupportnationalpriorities,whilemaintainingastrongfoundationofbroad,fundamentalresearchinnanosciencethatprovidesacontinuingpipelineofnewdiscoveriesthatwillenablefuturerevolutionaryapplications.
