This series comprises the reviews of the Psychological Appraisals undertaken by Dr Evan Davies. The psychometric testing conducted by Evan Davies on patients at Chelmsford Private Hospital before or after treatment of patients by the procedures known as “Narcosis Therapy” or “Deep Sleep Therapy” and if the contribution of such testing had established maintenance and justification of the treatment.The series contains the Psychological Appraisals for patients that had DST treatment and a control group that did not receive DST treatment. The files are arranged alphabetically by surname. The appraisals were generally photocopies of the original appraisals and were attached to the review. The reviews were conducted by two experts that were engaged by the Commission and two further experts nominated by Dr Davies. The panel also examined the reports for the purpose of determining their quality in relation to reliability, validity, appropriateness of standards, of particular tests chosen and consistency. Consensus was written on the reviews when agreement was made by the reviewers.The Psychological Appraisals record the patient's name, age, date of appraisal and who referred the patient. All measurements of traits were expressed in percentile scores which indicated the relative standing of the person compared with the general population for the particular group. Fifty percent was the average. The appraisals were split into sections that began with a table of scores and then followed by comments. The section were Intellectual and Perceptual, Emotional and Personality, Motivational Genetic and Acquired Motivations, Diagnostic Features.The Psychological Report Review of the appraisals were in the form a sectioned questionnaire. The review reports contain the following sections: A. Readers Name (reviewer), Clients Name (the patient), sex of the client, date of birth , age of time of report, date of report, date of DST, medication at the time of testing if available and review number. The following sections contain multiple questions under the headings: B. Description, assessment of degree of disturbance and diagnosis. Diagnostic formulation/degree of pathology, C. Treatment D. Improvement/deterioration/change E. Prognostic and a Checklist of tests given.
