Screen Industry Survey Data Collection 2016/17

Population selection The population for the Screen Industry Survey 2016/17 was 3,681 enterprises. In 2015/16 it was 3,235 enterprises. See 'Target population' selection under 'Screen Series Data Collection'. Response rates The overall target response rate for the Screen Industry Survey 2016/17 was 75 percent. We achieved an overall response rate of 77 percent. A weight adjustment was applied to account for non-responding units. We identified businesses as key units if their response to a survey question was considerable in the previous year, or if GST figures suggested they would significantly affect the results in the current year. The target response rate was 100 percent for businesses identified as key units. We achieved a 98 percent response rate. Reference period The reference period for the survey was the 2016/17 financial year. Businesses with balance dates falling between 1 January and 30 September supplied financial data for the year ending 2017. Businesses with balance dates falling between 1 October and 31 December supplied financial data for the year ending 2016. Given the transitory nature of businesses in the industry, we excluded any business that stopped operating before 1 April 2016 or that started up after 31 March 2017. Questionnaire changes The Screen Industry Survey has been run since 2005. While key questions are retained, some questions have been added, as a result of the information data users require. The key changes to the 2017 questionnaire were: • the number of completed screen productions for online only programmes was introduced and split into 1) number of series, and 2) number of one off/standalone programmes. • Callaghan Innovation Grant was introduced for New Zealand government funding. • The New Zealand Screen Production Grant for New Zealand government funding was split into 1) New Zealand productions, and 2) international productions. • Crowd funding (such as Boosted or PledgeMe) was introduced for New Zealand private sector financing.
