Whole genome sequencing of AMR E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates from gull feces in Alaska

Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were cultured from gull feces near the upper and lower Kenai River, Alaska and tested for phenotypic antibiotic resistance. Isolates resistant to one or more antibiotic were whole genome sequenced and antimicrobial resistance genes were identified. In parallel, DNA was extracted directly from paired gull fecal samples and a commercially available qPCR assay was used to identify antimicrobial resistance genes. Detections of antimicrobial resistance genes were evaluated between the two methods.
