Investigating the relation between proximity induced magnetisation and the anomalous Nernst effect in ordered CoPt alloys

Recent studies have shown the importance of proximity-induced- magnetisation (PIM) on spin-transport for spin-orbit torques (SOT) and spin pumping and in ferromagnet (FM)-heavy metal (HM) systems. When the HM-FM interface is separated by a thin, nominally spin-transparent layer, of Au or Cu (0-3 nm), Pt PIM at the HM-FM interface decays rapidly, which is mirrored by a rapid fall in the spin-transport. The impact of PIM on thermal spin-transport effects, however, remains unexplored. One such example is the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), which Toyama et al. (2024) investigated recently in compositionally graded CoPt thin films. This UK-Japan collaborative proposal requests time to map the magnetisation profile of Pt via XMCD fluorescence and resonant X-ray magnetic reflectivity (XRMR) measurements in these samples as a function of composition and to determine any correlation with the enhancement of ANE to inform our understanding of thermal spin transport and PIM.
