Pornography and gender normative beliefs

This study (N = 1,440, Mage = 23.86, SD = 4.79) adds important insights to the literature by investigating the indirect association between pornography consumption and gender normative beliefs through gender and sexual role beliefs and attitudes, and the moderating role of gender non-conformity. Gender normative beliefs were measured via vignettes describing a school context, in which a teacher and a student violated gender norms. Findings indicated that more stereotypical gender and sexual role beliefs and attitudes associate with more rigid gender normative beliefs. Furthermore, compared to women, men’s pornography consumption indirectly related to gender normative beliefs through gender and sexual role beliefs and attitudes. Specific levels of gender conformity and non conformity form a strengthening and buffering role, respectively.
