Native avocado landraces from Central America

We shotgun sequenced the genomes of native avocado trees grown in house gardens and local farms from Nicaragua, Honduras, and Chiapas. Our main goals were to better understand past cultivation and dispersal patterns of avocado cultivars and gauge the degree of influence of commercial production on local germplasm. Our study illustrates the importance of native genomes to capture the full picture of plant domestication and provides a detailed view of the available biological resources available for breeders to maintain a healthy level of cultivated genetic diversity.
