We evaluate the performance of shotgun sequencing (low coverage genome sequencing) of museum specimens with a wide age range from three key insect taxa to explore the utility of a fast, generic and inexpensive approach to obtain mtDNA data from natural history collections to support DNA-based biodiversity inventories and biomonitoring.
