The whole-transcriptome analysis of the visceral mass tissue of L. marginalis is necessary to discover homologs of important components of immunity, growth, and reproduction. As L. marginalis is a widely cultured aquaculture species for harvesting pearls, the transcriptome characterization would shed light to get a conceptual understanding of defense and physiology in freshwater pearl mollusks. Further, it will provide a benchmark for functional genomics studies.
