Freshwater archeal diversity in Swedish lakes

Despite their key role in biogeochemical processes, in particular the methane cycle, Archaea are widely underrepresented in molecular surveys as a result of their lower abundance in comparison to Bacteria and Eukaryotes. Here, we use a parallel high-resolution small subunit rRNA gene sequencing approach to explore archaeal diversity in 109 Swedish lakes, and reveal archaeal community assembly mechanisms along large scale latitudinal, climate (nemoral to arctic), and nutrient (oligotrophic to eutrophic) gradients.
