We report the genome sequence of the first wild type strain of Azotobacter vinelandii. The genome sequence of the A. vinelandii strain DJ (TaxID: 322710) is also available but it carries an algU::IS mutation. algU encodes a stress response sigma factor that in this bacterium is necessary to withstand adverse environmental conditions such as oxidative stress and for the production of the exopolysaccharide alginate and the formation of differentiated cells resistant to desiccation. Strain AEIV carries a wild type algU allele. In other gamma-proteobacteria it is well known that the absence of the AlgU sigma factor favors the accumulation of suppressor mutations in the genome allowing cell survival. Therefore, the genome sequence of strain AEIV is crucial to understand the genetics of important biological processes that have been historically studied in this bacterium, i.e. nitrogen fixation, respiration, alginate and poly-B-hydroxybutyrate production, cell development, among others.
