Hospitalisation and routine antibiotic treatment in complicated severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is part of global guidelines but may exacerbate antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Health care facilities for children with SAM are often overcrowded, increasing the risk of nosocomial infections and bacterial transmission between patients. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the carriage of AMR Gram-negative bacteria in an inpatient SAM treatment centre comparing the microbiota at admission and patient discharge.
