Global prediction of 95% cumulative distribution depth of forest fine roots considering stand age

Fine roots play a critical role in regulating water and nutrient uptake in forests, but their global vertical distribution remains poorly understood. We developed a global 1-kilometer resolution dataset describing the depth within which 95% of fine roots are distributed for 2010 and 2020. By combining root observations with climate, soil, and forest age information, we found that climate and tree age strongly shape root distribution patterns. This dataset improves our understanding of forest adaptation and provides new information for global ecosystem studies.
