FFEM-DB 2.0 Database of Flood Fatalities from the Euro-Mediterranean region

Twelve of these correspond to entire countries (Albania, Austria, Switzerland, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Türkiye, United Kingdom), while four correspond to two Spanish regions (Balearic Islands and Catalonia) and two French regions (Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur).FFEM-DB 2.0 substantially expands the spatial and temporal coverage of the previous release (FFEM-DB) by updating records through December 31, 2024, incorporating four additional study areas, and introducing a new event identifier that enables event-based analyses and comparison with international disaster databases.Flood fatality cases are georeferenced at the LAU level (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics), allowing analyses of the spatial distribution of fatalities in relation to geographic and demographic data. The database provides anonymized information on victims’ profiles, accident locations, and the circumstances of fatal accidents, enabling systematic investigation of the demographic, behavioral, situational, and environmental factors associated with flood mortality.Standardized data collection criteria and a harmonized classification methodology ensures consistency and comparability across regions beyond administrative boundaries, while also highlighting variations in data completeness among the study areas
