Aberdeen Pavilion (2022)

The Aberdeen Pavilion is a large-scale Victorian exhibition hall that was built in 1898 [1]. The brightly coloured structure is located in the heart of Lansdowne Park near the Rideau Canal. The structure is owned by the city of Ottawa and is managed by site custodian Leslie Collins and Lansdowne Park portfolio manager Benoit Osborne. The structure has historical and architectural value. The structure demonstrates the style and characteristics of Victorian architecture and is the sole remaining structure of its caliber in Canada. The structure also features advanced framing technology in its interior. The pavilion holds value in its historical context as it illustrates the importance of 19th-century agricultural fairs. Keeping in context with agricultural fairs, the Pavilion holds farmer's markets every Sunday at the current time. Attributes of the structure that further its heritage value include its late-Victorian architectural style which is seen throughout the exterior of the structure, its structurally inventive and lightweight skeleton located in its large open space interior, its large windows, which are arranged in long rows on every wall, allowing for the diffusion of natural lighting, its large domes, and the large facades which face north, south, east, and west, which feature biological ornamentation (vines, horses, and cattle). This is a dataset of information compiled for Courses CIVE3207 (ARCN4100), CIVE4601 (ARCN4200), CIVE 5603 Course on Advanced Building Characterization, Conservation and Rehabilitation, or any other for students of the Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Program (Engineers and architects) at Carleton University. Students of the Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Program (Engineers and architects) at Carleton University will use these data to produce a Heritage Recording Dossier of this important Site.
