Reef-building corals are at risk of extinction from ocean warming and their persistence requires that adaptation keeps pace with temperature rise. Some corals can enhance their thermal limits by associating with dinoflagellate photosymbionts (family Symbiodiniaceae) of superior stress tolerance, yet the extent to which these symbiont communities will reorganise under increased warming pressure is unclear. To investigate this question, we surveyed spatiotemporal and host variation in coral-symbiont associations in the hottest reefs in the world.
