Shockoe Bottom in the era of modernity continued to proliferate commercially, and transportation systems control the sculpting of the landscape, through electric streetcars, and eventually an interstate highway that bisected the city. Meanwhile deep-seated racial strife led to suburban sprawl, and once vibrant industries began scaling back operations, that blighted the fabric of Shockoe Bottom. In addition, 20th century cultural and economic lifestyle clustering was enabled automobility, redlining, and eminent domain.
