Psilocybin Catalyst Hypothesis This hypothesis proposes that human cognitive evolution was not solely the result of gradual natural selection, but was significantly accelerated by neurochemical catalysts present in the environment. Specifically, it suggests that Neanderthals, through the accidental consumption of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, experienced temporary expansions in cognitive, linguistic, and social abilities. These enhancements—such as increased brain plasticity, improved communication, and greater cooperative behavior—would have conferred survival advantages, increasing reproductive success and shaping evolutionary trajectories.
