In 2023, there were 3.9 million small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Italy. 94.6 percent were classified as micro enterprises, employing from zero to nine workers. Two main factors are used to determine a medium-sized, small, or micro enterprise: stuff headcount and turnover or balance sheet total. Medium-sized enterprises have between 50 and 250 employees and a turnover equal to or below 50 million euros, or a balance sheet total equal or inferior to 43 million euros. Instead, small enterprises have between ten and 49 employees and a turnover or a balance sheet total equal to or below ten million euros.
