Eight bivalve (phylum Mollusca) families have independently formed extracellular or intercellular symbioses with chemosynthetic bacteria, allowing them to thrive in extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. However, no species from the order Pectinida was reported to symbiosis with chemosynthetic bacteria. Here, we report the first chemosynthetic bacterium (Proteobacteria: Gammaproteobacteria) associated with a dee-sea scallop Catillopecten margaritatus collected from the Haima seep in the South China Sea.
