VPRS 10293 Correspondence Files [Horticultural Division]

These records were created by the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture. Files contain copies of inward and outward correspondence and reports which reflect the Horticultural Divisions policy development, administration and relations with clients mainly involving producers and members of the public.The subject of many files will reflect the varying and changing functions performed by the Division throughout its existence. In 1924 the Horticultural Division (later known as the Horticulture Division or the Division of Horticulture) was established by combining the Orchard Supervisors Branch of the Agricultural Division and the Fruit Inspection Branch of the Produce Division. By 1935 the Produce Division had been broken up and the Potato Inspection Branch was also transferred to the Horticultural Division. In 1943 responsibility for Potato Inspection passed to the Agricultural Division. In 1966 a new branch within the Horticultural Division was established dealing with Market Inspection.In 1975 the Agricultural and Horticultural Divisions were combined to form the Plant Services Group (PSG). The PSG was made up of three divisions. Plant Industries, Plant Research and Plant Standards. The four main branches within the Horticultural Division prior to 1975 (Fruit Inspection, Orchard Supervision, Market Inspection and the Administrative area) were incorporated into the Plant Standards Division.
