A signaling pathway involving the protease Eep and the alternative sigma factor SigV is activated by lysozyme in Enterococcus faecalis. Sensing of lysozyme leads to expression of genes that alter the bacterial cell surface decorations, making E. faecalis gain resistance to high concentrations of lysozyme. Deletion of eep and sigV in E. faecalis strain OG1RF renders cells more susceptible to lysozyme. We isolated lysozyme resistant genetic suppresor mutants of delta eep and delta sigV strains.
