metagenomic sequencing of deep-sea sediments of ferromanganese nodules fields

Deep-sea ferromanganese nodules are found over vast areas of the ocean floor and are one of the best known unique habitats in the abyss. The metal-rich deep-sea sediments of ferromanganese nodules regions provide special conditions conducive for the growth of microorganisms with metabolic capacities. While several studies have investigated the microbial diversity in the sediments surrounding ferromanganese nodules, little is known about how these microbes contribute to ferromanganese nodule formation and drive elemental cycling. Genome-resolved metagenomics was applied to the sediments surrounding ferromanganese nodules (depth 4983-5211 m) in Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
