Southern Education Data, 1880-1910
This is county-level data for 8 southern states (AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, VA) taken from the reports of state superintendents of schools and tax authorities, plus racial data from national censuses and from gubernatorial and presidential elections. Except for North Carolina, where the data is annual throughout the period, the education and tax data is for each 5 years (1880, 1885, 1890, 1895, 1900, 1905, 1910).  It is recorded in both Excel and PDF form, and there are variable listings for each state.  The North Carolina data was used in my article, "Progressivism for Middle-Class Whites Only," published in 1980 in the Journal of Southern History.
