Shigella sonnei and S. flexneri isolates in Spain from 2015 to 2022

We established a collaboration between the Spanish National Reference Laboratory for Food and Waterborne diseases and the Portuguese National Reference Laboratory for Gastrointestinal Infections and studied the microbiological surveillance data on S. sonnei and S. flexneri. We aimed to confirm the intensification of fluoroquinolone-resistant shigellosis cases in the Iberian Peninsula and identify the clones in circulation since 2015. We tested the antimicrobial resistance profile of all isolates and performed whole genome sequencing on fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates(WGS).
