VPRS 12845 Rolling Stock Register I

The volumes in the series consist of the listings, originally created and maintained by the Rolling Stock Branch, of the rolling stock owned and operated by the Victorian Railways. These listings were originally transcribed into these volumes from an earlier version and then added to as new stock was acquired. Two of the volumes were held at the Head Office of the Victorian Railways (Volumes 1 and 2) whilst the other units were originally held and entered into at the Newport Workshops. The two sets were brought together in 1927.Entries were made for each class and type of rolling stock. Details given are the class designation, the number, the date upon which the stock was put into service, where it was built and the builders name, details of the tare, the load and axles, the wheels diameter, boxes, draw-gear and a column was allocated for remarks. For each of the units of rolling stock information given is regarding the disposal of the unit at the end of its useful life - whether it was condemned, broken up or retained as part of an historical collection at the Newport Workshops or at some other location. The Secretary to the Railways was notified of these disposals and reference may be found to them in the series relating to the registration of the Secretary's correspondence.As from 1959, listings of stock still in service were transcribed onto the loose-leaf sheets in VPRS 12846 Rolling Stock Register II and are identified there at the top of the sheets with the volume and folio (or page) numbers from these volumes.
