These records appear to be the personal papers of Price Howell, Statistical Clerk, Chief Accountant's office 1892- 1916. The majority of the items which comprise this series are handwritten statistical tables and related material complied by Mr Howell. The volumes were possibly prepared as a private interest by an employee gifted with penmanship. The statistics are mostly of the operation of New South Wales railways but contain some data concerning tramways and railways in the other Australian states. Often the data is presented in the form of graphs, diagrams or maps. Most are presented in small leather-bound volumes with gold leaf trim, others have either lost their original binding or are in draft form. Some are signed Price Howell Lindfield or Cronulla, others are stamped 'T. Hall, Chief Accountant'. In addition to the statistical volumes there is apparent memorabilia including an application for a travel pass and an invitation to a banquet.. Custody History From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R250. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R250 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or
