We report a new pathway of pyrite formation in enrichment cultures of sulfate- and sulfur-reducing bacteria (Desulfovibrio and Sulfurospirillum) from a ferruginous lake (Lake Pavin, France). Pyrite originated from the reaction of microbially reduced sulfur compounds with amorphous Fe(III)-phosphate.
