All participants (both laypeople and judicial apprentices) completed the experiment in a classroom setting. They were asked to read through the materials and then complete the questionnaire. After reading the 5-page-long transcript of testimonies, all participants were asked to fulfil a short 7-item questionnaire. They were asked to indicate on a 5-point scale (the meaning of points 1 through 5 was described below each scale) whether each of the defendants committed the crime and whether they find the victim’s and the eyewitnesses’ testimony credible. Additionally, they were asked to rate their confidence in the assessment of eyewitnesses’ credibility and Defendant 3’s culpability. Finally, they were asked to indicate their age and gender. The study employed a 2 (consistent vs. inconsistent testimony) x 2 (unrelated vs. related eyewitness) x 2 (group: judicial apprentices vs. laypeople) mixed model design. The dependent variables were a) eyewitness’ credibility assessment, b) confidence in one’s assessment of eyewitness credibility, c) defendant’s culpability, and d) confidence in the defendant’s culpability assessment.
