State Heritage Areas

A state heritage area is a clearly defined region with outstanding natural or cultural elements significant to South Australia's development and identity. A state heritage area is notable for its distinct character or 'sense of place', formed by:\r\n\r\n- buildings and structures\r\n- spaces and allotments\r\n- patterns of streets\r\n- natural features or the developed landscape.\r\n\r\nState Heritage Areas in South Australia have been designated under the South Australian Heritage Act 1978 and authorised under the Development Act 1993.
