Surface seawater samples were collected on a transect through two mesoscale cyclonic eddies off the coast of California that formed in roughly the same location 8 months apart. DNA was extracted from the seawater samples and the 18S gene was amplified using diatom specific PCR primers. Diatom 18S amplicons were sequenced on a MiSeq desktop sequencer.
