Lasker (1880-1952) established the Lasker Foundation in 1942 to support biomedical research. Mrs. Lasker became an activist for public funding of medical research, and was instrumental in increasing budgets for the National Institutes of Health and creating several new NIH institutes. The prestigious Lasker Awards recognize the contributions of scientists, physicians, and public servants who have made major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of disease. DeBakey received a Lasker Award in 1963 for his trailblazing work in cardiovascular surgery, and subsequently served on the Lasker Awards jury; he was chairman of that group from 1967-1997. He and Mrs. Lasker were longtime friends and fellow advocates of progressive government health programs.
