By analyzing the metagenomes of 4,128 rivers and lakes worldwide, we constructed a global surface water genome catalog. A total of 79,354 metagenomes (MAGs) were obtained, and further clustering at 95% amino acid identity (ANI) resulted in 20,017 non-redundant microbial operational taxonomic units (mOTUs)
